Pot Luck #56: TXT U L8R - Texting
I do send text messages fairly often, but I prefer talking on the phone. My husband and I did a lot of text messaging to family and friends during Hurricane Ike, when the phone lines were out. I don't usually use text lingo, so I learned a whole lot on the Lingo 2 Word site. I think text messaging while driving is extremely dangerous, because your eyes aren't on the road! My sister does that, and it drives me crazy.

Potluck #56: To Tweet or Not To Tweet...Twitter
I signed up for Twitter about a month ago at the insistence of a friend. I honestly don't care for it. There are random people "following" me on Twitter, which I think is creepy. Aside from a couple of real life friends, no one I know is using Twitter because we're all on Facebook.
I did a search for "doberman" on Twitter (I never used the search feature before), and I found everything from links to pictures of dobermans, people commenting on their dogs, people wanting dobermans...etc. It was kind of interesting.
I guess I just don't really understand the point of Twitter. Maybe it's because I already use a social networking program, and I don't feel the need to keep up with another one? Perhaps I need to learn more about Twitter before I pass judgement, but for now, I don't think I'll be using this program.

Pot Luck #55: Getting the Most Out of Facebook
I have been a Facebook user for years now, and I love it! I log on a least once a day, if not more. I think it's a great way to stay in touch with old friends.
I use many applications on Facebook, but my favorite is Pieces of Flair. There is flair for pretty much anything, and it's fun to send them to your friends.
As with any social networking site, there are many pros and cons with Facebook. I do like the privacy settings, which enable you to have control over who can see what on your profile. On the other hand, I'm not crazy about the new Facebook layout, because it's harder to navigate.

Books, Readers and Beyond: #54 Social Networking Through Books
1. I have never been the member of a book club, online or in-person, but I would enjoy the in-person setting more. I think the face-to-face interaction with others is important.
2. I think a Mothers book club would be interesting, focusing on books about mothers and their family interactions. I used Reading Group Choices to find a book that we could discuss: Believe Me by Nina Killham.
3. I used Goodreads and LibraryThing to find reviews on All the Lovely Bad Ones: A Ghost Story by Mary Downing Hahn. Goodreads and LibraryThing both rated it a 3.66. I was surprised to see the exact same rating at both sites.

1. The three closest booksellers to my branch are a Christian bookstore called Heaven's Way, another local bookstore called The Book Attic, There is also a Half Price Books and Barnes and Noble fairly close by. All of these stores have websites, and I was surprised to see that you could make purchases online at most of them.
2. I searched for All the Lovely Bad Ones: A Ghost Story by Mary Downing Hahn. I found it at Barnes and Noble for $11.20. I also searched Bartleby.com and the HCPL Digital Media Catalog, but I could not find it in an eBook format.
3. I have previously downloaded eBooks and I do not care for them. I much prefer a print copy of a book. I do think eBooks are advantageous for people who do a lot of traveling, because they can either listen to an audio book or read a book on their laptop rather than having to carry several books with them.

1. I searched for a read-alike that is comparable with one of my favorite authors, Sophie Kinsella. On NoveList Plus, I found several authors, including Helen Fielding, Jane Green, and Marian Keyes. I couldn't find a listing for Sophie Kinsella on Fiction_L Booklists. On Library Booklists and Bibliographies, I did not find any listings by author, but there were several lists of recommendations in the "Chick Lit" genre that would compare with Kinsella.
2. Using NoveList Plus, I found two books suitable for a fourth grade girl interested in animals, The Good Dog by Avi and Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. I also found two books for a thirteen year old boy who is interested in ghost stories, The Ghost Hunt Series by Shiho Inada and All the Lovely Bad Ones: A Ghost Story by Mary Downing Hahn.
3. For the customer who likes Dean Koontz, I used NoveList Plus, and found these authors to recommend to him: Greg Bear, Dan Simmons, and Charles Grant. It was too difficult, in my opinion, to navigate any of the other sites when searching by author.
4. For the customer who read Alanna: the First Adventure by Tamora Pierce, and wants to continue the series, I used the What's Next database, and found the rest of the books in the "Song of the Lioness quartet": In the Hand of the Goddess, The Woman who Rides Like a Man, and Lioness Rampant.
