Week 6 #15 - Library 2.0

The article, Away from the "icebergs", really got me thinking. In order for libraries to continue to be a productive resource in the community, not only do they have to keep up with the new technology, they have to stay AHEAD of it so they can assist patrons. Everything is accesible online now, and the need for an actual library with books is diminishing. This quote, in particular, concerned me: "we’ve seen a 55 percent drop in circulation rates over the past twelve years". This fact is very disheartening, since I am considering a career in Library Science. I have noticed this trend in our libraries, though. Most people come in to access the computers, not to check items out. If you have internet access at home, you almost never have to leave your house. What bothers me the most about all of this is the lack of face-to-face interaction in our society now. All of this new technology seems to make everything so impersonal.
